Mobile trends

10 Major Mobile Learning Trends to Watch For Article by Mind/shift Mobile devices in education are becoming more ubiquitous. Technology has been used in the classroom for decades now. But with the advent of cloud computing and the proliferation of smaller, more portable computers and Internet-capable devices, it’s now possible to bring the classroom into the technology instead. Mobile learning, focuses on learning through mobile devices, allowing learners to move about in a classroom or remotely learn from any location of their choice. The movement has gained a lot of steam in recent years, and despite some criticisms, isn’t like to fade fast – especially as new technologies that make mobile learning more practical continue to emerge and the popularity of remote learning opportunities like online colleges continue to grow. While the applications of mobile learning are growing all the time, Online College has highlighted some of the major trends here, showing tge changes in how w...

3 Common Project Management Pitfalls

3 Common Project Management Pitfalls James Clear (Wise Bread) July 27, 2011 I'm willing to bet that you and your small business have a few projects that you're working on. Of course, anyone who has worked on their fair share of projects can tell you that things rarely go according to plan. In fact, problems arise so frequently that your approach to solving common project management issues can have a large impact on the success of your business. How you solve project management problems can be the difference between consistent growth and total chaos. To help you avoid the pitfalls of project management, here are three common problems that most projects managers encounter and how to solve them. You schedule time to work on your project but other things always come up We typically schedule our time for a specific task based on how long we think it will take us to complete. The issue with this strategy is that it doesn't account for how much time we can actually spen...
Managing Yourself: What’s Your Personal Social Media Strategy? by Soumitra Dutta The CEO of a global technology firm was invited to lecture at a local university on the future of the internet. After his presentation, a student in the audience asked him for his views on network neutrality: the idea that internet service providers shouldn’t base their prices on the content their customers access. The CEO answered candidly, arguing in favor of price discrimination based on content; there was an engaging exchange; and he left satisfied with his visit. Little did he know that, in the coming days, his semiprivate comments would enter a very public realm—the blogosphere—unleashing a storm of controversy around him and his company. (For confidentiality, names have not been revealed.) The executive had no active social media presence—no profile on Facebook or LinkedIn, no Twitter account, no blog on the company’s website. He had decided that social media weren’t “his thing.” In fact,...

2011 CIO 100: 5 Ways to Win At Project Management By Rick Swanborg, CIO July 29, 2011 02:40 PM ET Behind every winning CIO 100 project, there's a successful management strategy. This year's winners offer a few techniques that should be in every IT executive's bag of tricks. Here are five worth noting: 1. Hold leaders doubly accountable. Go Daddy forced team leaders to manage the contradictions of pushing an innovation agenda while engineering a solution. While building its winning one-click application- and server-provisioning project, Go Daddy assigned what it called an "innovation engineer" to lead each subteam. Each innovation engineer coordinated both the ideas generated by the subteam and the engineering blueprints that resulted to ensure the project came together smoothly. "This made them take ownership of a very complex process, which showed bottom-line results," says Neil Warner, Go Daddy's CIO. 2. Give suppliers more attention. CI...

How do we increase the probability of success for a project?

How do we increase the probability of success for a project? Posted on July 11, 2011 by Ron Rosenhead Many people will know of Glen Alleman. He writes an excellent blog called Herding Cats. Glen recently wrote an article called “Project Governance and Agile Development.” In the blog he posed a very important question: How do we increase the probability of success for a project? I felt inspired by this – I must have been because at 0630 on my morning walk around the streets of North London I started to think about a series of supplementary questions that need to be asked and of course answered. The actual questions will depend on your company, the project, and the circumstances behind the project….. Why do we need this project? How does this project link into our business strategy? What do key stakeholders say about this project? Who will deliver this project? Do we have the skills to deliver this project? How do you know? Do we need to creat...

A Standard Business Plan Outline

by Tim Berry What information needs to be in your business plan? What is the order of information that will make the most sense to lenders and investors? You can answer these questions with the business plan outlines provided below. What are the standard elements of a business plan? If you do need a standard business plan to seek funding — as opposed to a plan-as-you-go approach for running your business, which I describe below — there are predictable contents of a standard business plan outline. For example, a business plan normally starts with an Executive Summary, which should be concise and interesting. People almost always expect to see sections covering the Company, the Market, the Product, the Management Team, Strategy, Implementation, and Financial Analysis. The precise business plan format can vary. Is the order important? If you have the main components, the order doesn’t matter that much, but here’s the sequence I suggest for a business plan. I have provided two outl...

Should project managers get their hands dirty, or only manage projects?

by Pat Gray Created on: October 20, 2010 Traditionally, project managers planned and managed - teams designed, developed, tested and implemented. In team building courses, the person playing the manager were chastised if they stepped out of their managerial role and lent even the least bit of assistance. However it's a new day and there are new ways of working. Project manager can't just sit back and expect to do nothing but plan and direct the activities of their minions. Today, to keep costs down and to keep projects moving forward, project managers must get their hands dirty. There are a few exceptions to this rule, at least in participation in the project in the strictest sense: - If the project manager's skill set is in managing or planning only - no technical experience in the application in question. - If planning and managing take up all of the time allotted for the project management function. - If the project manager thinks they'll get to do any...

10 Critical Project Management Principles

Don't Fail to Plan (Properly) - 10 Critical Project Management Principles Written by: Pat Gray 8/9/2010 12:00:00 AM Tags: Project Management Roadmap Planning Methodology Published by: Clarizen Project Management Software There are a multitude of great quotes and adages which should be beacons of truth for all project managers. One of my favorites is "failing to plan is planning to fail". It might be intuitively obvious to most of us, but not all project managers (or their managers or customers or their teams) seem to get it. Perhaps project managers think they're planning just because they've ticked a box on the project completion form. By the way, this is one of the big problems I have with companies that put more emphasis on methodology than on actually getting the job done - but I digress... Or maybe the adage should to be changed to "failing to plan properly is properly planning to fail". Either way, the only wa...

10 Body Language Techniques to Make You Succeed in Business

10 Body Language Techniques to Make You Succeed in Business Every good businessperson knows that what you say has never been as important as how you say it. Even when you are not speaking, you are still communicating, even if you are not aware of it. By becoming aware of your body language and what you are saying with it, you can begin to control it and put forward the impression that will most help you in your business. By using these techniques you will save yourself time – and ensure that you succeed. 10. Use Eye Contact Meeting someone’s eyes has long been seen as a mark of honesty and good faith. This does not mean that you should enter a staring contest: maintaining too much eye contact can seem aggressive, and unless that’s something you want to achieve, it should be avoided. Make sure that you do not look away as someone is speaking about something they feel is important, as this is a sign that you are dismissing their opinion. 9. Develop Good Posture Hunching your ...
